First things first: thank you, because without you the Michigan Lean Consortium (MLC) would not exist! 

We have an awesome opportunity to present for this organization.  We are starting our search for a new MLC President.  The President of the MLC is the one who runs the day-to-day operations, works closely with the Board of Directors, collaborates with Team Leaders for all major functions within the organization, and manages other independent contractors and MLC contracts.  The Board of Directors provides the direction and aim for the organization with the President carrying out the mission.

Our President’s position is that of an independent contractor, so there is built-in flexibility.  The current requirement is for a part-time position with the hourly rate being negotiable; however, this position can become anything that the right person creates, as long as it aligns with our mission and supports our current and future members.  In addition to having the right skillset, our President will also need to reside in our beautiful state in order to be regularly accessible to do the work of the organization.

Our President should be a self-directed leader who can grow the MLC and cultivate innovative partnerships and opportunities to expand the reach of the organization.  The right person will be passionate about lean and comfortable facilitating, coaching, and leading our volunteer organization to make the MLC the leading lean organization in the Midwest.

The Michigan Lean Consortium (MLC) was founded in 2008 by a group of forward-thinking individuals who firmly believed that if every Michigan organization used lean principles, the state's economy would rebound. 

The founders' goal was to spread lean principles and tools throughout the state to make Michigan the best place in the country to live, learn, and earn.

MLC is a non-profit 501c(3) organization that is governed by an all-volunteer Board of Directors.


The President has overall strategic and operational responsibility for MLC contractors, programs, expansion, and execution of its mission.  The President works collaboratively with the Board of Directors in leading the transformation of MLC to significantly increase the number of members reached.  The President promotes the mission and policies established by the Board of Directors and is responsible for all planning, finance, fundraising strategy, and day-to-day activities.


  • ·       Cultivate a strong and transparent working relationship with the Board and ensure open communication including the measurement of financial, program, and impact performance against agreed upon milestones and goals.
  • ·       Assure that MLC operates in compliance with all requirements of the MLC Operating Agreement and additional guidelines established by the Board of Directors. Work with the Board of Directors to develop policies and assure proper governance of the organization.
  • ·       Assure the financial stability of the MLC to support operational and strategic plans and sustainability including the development and implementation of effective fundraising campaigns and other innovative approaches to development, accurate and timely financial reporting, analysis of financial information, development of annual budget and management of financial resources to meet all organizational objectives.
  • ·       Develop and implement strategic plans that assure the stability and growth of the MLC within the context of internal and external market forces. Collaborate with the Board of Directors to refine and implement the strategic plan while ensuring that budget and contractor priorities are aligned with the core mission.
  • ·       Formulate and execute comprehensive marketing & communications, branding, development, and program strategies that will ensure consistency throughout the organization and enhance revenue.  Build collaborative partnerships in new markets.
  • ·       Work with the Chair of the Board of Directors to recruit, orient, and encourage engagement of Board members, coordinate effective regular meetings of the Board, the Advisory Board and executive & standing committees and teams including the development of the agenda and any reports and materials.
  • ·       Lead, coach, develop and build highly-performing contractors.  Manage performance to assure achievement of all goals and objectives.
  • ·       Raise the external profile of the MLC.  Prepare and implement with board approval a public awareness plan and act as a representative with governmental, community, civic and industry groups.
  • ·       Build a diverse and inclusive Board, representative of the community, which is highly engaged and willing to leverage and secure resources.
  • ·       Actively engage and energize volunteers, board members, committees, partnering organizations, and financial sponsors.  Share the inspiration of the mission and the passion for teaching and learning.
  • ·       Other duties as requested by the Board of Directors.

  • ·       Bachelor’s degree or equivalent business experience
  • ·       Demonstrated experience in related field with a successful track record
  • ·       People management experience
  • ·       Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • ·       Strong marketing, public relations or fundraising experience (leading ‘the ask’)
  • ·       Willingness to undergo criminal, credit and background checks


  • ·        Management experience in education or nonprofit organization
  • ·        Experience managing a budget of $1M+
  • ·        Experience working with a Board of Directors
  • ·        Demonstrated understanding of the free enterprise system


This is an Independent Contractor position, working approximately 30 hours per month with the hourly rate being negotiated based on experience.
